Gerald McDermott dedicated his life to telling stories from all around the world – Ancient Greece to West Africa; South Asia to Ireland; Japan to the Colorado Plateau. His retellings of stories, myths, and tales in accessible ways opened new vistas for young and old alike. His bold, vivid art illustrated those narratives in unforgettable ways. As an academic and as an author for children, he popularized stories many people in Euro-America had never before encountered.
The Gerald McDermott Foundation, Inc. is dedicated to illuminating and celebrating the art of Gerald McDermott. The Foundation will work to foster youth literacy and the arts, with a special focus on the indigenous cultures that inspired Mr. McDermott’s work. Through our initiatives, we aim to inspire and empower the next generation of artists and storytellers.
Through his vibrant text and bold, graphic renderings of timeless tales from around the world, Gerald communicated his deep understanding of the transformative power of myth.
